Continuing on with my 7 favorite kitchen essentials, the next on my list is the Vitamix.
This kitchen essential can be used in so many ways. As mentioned in other posts, anything needing a quick purée or smooth texture can easily be made in this high-powered wonder. Each morning I send my hubby off to work with a protein-packed, nutrient dense smoothie. I will show you one of my favorite smoothies step-by-step later in this post.
Often, I go to the store and feel tempted to grab several things of hummus in those cute round containers. For convenience, these are great. But, for this hungry, pregnant and nursing mother–they don’t last long! They also are not so kind to the pocket book. I like to make a healthy batch of my own hummus (enough to fill a medium sized glass Pyrex and then some). It helps with quick snacks, getting all my good veggies in, and saves us money.
The Vitamix makes it possible to make my own nut butters in a matter of minutes. My “fancy” homemade peanut butter contains one beautiful ingredient–peanuts, and nothing else! It takes one minute to grind up the peanuts. You simply push down with the tamper and increase the speed slowly. Presto! Homemade peanut butter that your family will love!
If you are wanting to make a delicious dish for dinner, you can easily incorporate the Vitamix. For my red sauce, I combine diced tomatoes and organic sauce into a fine, smooth texture.
Now onto a delicious smoothie recipe that your family will love!
Combine the following into the blender:
- 8 oz of milk or water (I use rice or almond milk or coconut water)
- 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
- 1 Tbsp of coffee beans (good for the morning!)
- 1 Tbsp Coconut oil
- 1 Tsp of coconut flakes
- Chia seeds
- Pinch of Cinnamon
- 5-6 ice cubes
Blend together on the smoothie setting or until well combined.
What a delicious snack or mini-meal. My family does coffee at any time. We actually had this smoothie around 9:30pm. Delicious 🙂
You may be thinking, can’t I just use a regular blender?! For many things, yes you can. I have noticed, compared to other blenders I have owned in the past, that the Vitamix does a far superior job and can do much more. Most blenders cannot make nut butter or hummus or give you as fine and smooth of a consistency to your daily smoothie or sauce. Again, you get what you pay for. There are other comparable high-powered blenders out there. Do your research, but don’t skimp if you are planning to upgrade. The Vitamix will last and has an incredible motor that is unlikely to die out for many, many years. Another fun feature? This is how I clean it every day…
- 2 squirts of soap
- 1 drop lemon essential oil
- 1/2 full of warm water
- Run on the “clean cycle” once. Rinse out with water!
